24 killed, 80 injured in militia clashes in Somalia

At least 24 people were killed when two militia groups clashed in the Somali semi-autonomous regions of Puntland and Galmudug, hospital sources and residents said Sunday.

About 80 others were injured during the fighting Sunday morning in the central town of Galkayo, which is divided between the two regions.

“Today’s clashes were the deadliest ones in a single day here in Galkayo,” medical official Abdiqani Mohamed told dpa.

Galkayo is currently run by two competing governments, which has led to ongoing tension in the area.

Two weeks ago, ten people were killed in similar clashes, after Galmudug accused Puntland of creating a livestock market in its part of the city.

Tens of thousands have fled the area in past months, according to the United Nations.
