Somalia: Heavy fighting broke out again in Galkayo

GALKAYO, Puntland- A fierce fighting between forces loyal to Galmudug and Puntland has flared up in Galkayo city on Sunday, less than a week after a peace agreement was brokered by UAE between the warring administrations, Garowe online reports.

Reports said the intense fighting has resulted in the death of 20 people and over 50 have sustained injuries.

The attack saw the capture of several soldiers from both sides, whereas Puntland forces were reported to have seized a battle wagon and scores of Galmudug forces, according to witnesses.

However, GO attempted to reach Galmudug authority for comments on the reasons of the clashes and casualties, but has declined to give clear response on the issue.

On the other hand, Puntland military official has confirmed to GO the clashes between the sides and blamed Galmudug forces for provoking Sunday’s attack.

Following the clashes, Puntland government has released statement indicating that Galmudug administration has breached a recent peace deal in UAE and efforts to end tensions in Mudug region.

“On today 6th November 2016, Puntland military forces were attacked for the 14th time by Galmudug forces, a clear sign of lack of commitment to peace and previous agreements by their administration,” read the statement.

Puntland government also noted that it’s going to take the necessary measures to protect its people of aggressions by Galmudug state and allied militias.

“We remind neighboring countries, international community and Somali Federal government that Puntland state is committed towards peace and stability in Mudug region,” read the statement.

So far Galmudug state has not released any statement in connection to today’s clashes.

Galkayo city has witnessed in the past months recurrent clashes between the neighboring states who been fighting for control over territories in Mudug region.
