Ethiopia releases about 2,000 detainees

About 2,000 individuals detained on suspicion of taking part in the recent violence in some parts of the country have been released after receiving education and counseling service.

Siraj Fegessa, Minister of Defense and Secretariat of the Command Post that was established to oversee the implementation of the nationwide State of Emergency, made the remark here yesterday during a press briefing.

Regarding the total number of individuals detained so far, Siraj said “this will be revealed by the Inquiry Board.”

More than 1, 500 illegal weapons had also been retrieved in close collaboration with the public, Secretariat indicated.

Moreover, over 400 individuals have so far given themselves in using the 10-day amnesty prescribed by the Command Post, he said.

In his briefing, Siraj also pointed out the gains made after the establishment of the Command Post.

The efforts made after the establishment of the Command Post fetched notable outcomes by containing the threats posed on the people and the massive damage caused on properties, he said.

The Command Post has also been successful in controlling the damage targeted on infrastructures and other economic pillars of the country, Siraj noted.

It played a crucial role in normalizing the public’s daily life, returning ransacked properties to rightful owners, including allowing fully and partially damaged firms to begin operation.

The joint efforts of the public with security force were credited for the successes obtained in restoring stability, according to Siraj.

He further called on the public to report if they see unusual or suspicious activities by using free of charge telephone numbers 816 and 987.
